Camping Equipment Demystified (April 14, 2024)

[👉🏾Online registration closes 4/12 – Attendees can register at the door👈🏾]

Welcome to the 2nd annual Camping Equipment Demystified event created by The Bronze Chapter.

This event centers people of color who are new to camping and backpacking, experienced campers wanting to learn more about equipment, and those who haven’t felt comfortable asking questions about camping or backpacking in a dominant-culture environment.

Bring your questions and be prepared to get inspired to camp with The Bronze Chapter and others this year!

!!! YES we will have RAFFLES !!!

We’ll gather in the large conference room at REI’s Seattle flagship store for this experiential, hands-on opportunity. Register today to come check out equipment, compare, and ask questions in a comfortable, supportive, judgment free environment.

UPDATE! We’ve just added 4 new learning stations: Camping with Kids; Camping for Fishing Hunting and Scouting; Camping Hygiene Head to Toe, and Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Come learn and chat at our learning stations:

TENT station: Experience the difference between 1 2 3 and 4-person tents and see an awesome bike packing tent. Learn about materials and seasonality, various types of poles, set up and take down, vestibules and doors, etc. Here you can also learn about *the 10 essentials* and the mindset of Leave No Trace (we teach LNT as a mindset instead of a set of principles).

CAMPING WITH KIDS station: Families come get inspiration, help, and ideas for engaging and empowering kids to connect with a lifelong love of nature and the outdoors from outdoor-loving moms (one who is a local Certified Interpretive Guide for the US Forest Service at Snoqualmie).

SLEEP station: Learn about synthetic versus down sleeping bags, how various sleeping mats create insulation and warmth, learn about our favorite pillows and light options, check out cots for comfort and more.

COOK, FUEL AND FOOD station: Learn about various stove and fuel types, see mess kits, and talk about our favorite dehydrated foods. There will be an outdoors demo.

CAMPING HYGIENE HEAD TO TOE station: Come learn about all things camping and backpacking hygiene, meet Anastasia Allison (Founder of Kula Cloth), enjoy some swag, and enter a chance win one-of-a-kind Kula Cloths created just for our event.

WATER FILTRATION AND STERILIZATION station: Learn about filtering and sterilizing options. There will be an outdoors demo.

BACKPACK station: Get information about packs, see various sizes (liters) of overnight and day packs, and we’ll help you get measured by REI staff if you’re interested in purchasing a pack.

CAMPING FOR FISHING, HUNTING, AND SCOUTING station: Interested in camping to fish, hunt or scout? Come meet Daniel, a volunteer with Hunters of Color, and learn how to get started, how the right preparation and equipment can add to your success, and more.

DEPARTMENT OF FISH AND WILDLIFE station: Come and check out what the Department of Fish and Wildlife has to offer, learn about the public lands that are available for outdoor recreationists to enjoy, and meet Larry Delgado (DFW Diversity Equity and Inclusion Manager) who will bring plenty of information and swag. DFW is dedicated to preserving, protecting, and perpetuating Washington State’s fish, wildlife, and ecosystems while providing sustainable fish and wildlife recreational and commercial opportunities. DFW manages dozens of wildlife areas and hundreds of water access areas around the state, offering fishing, hunting, wildlife viewing, and other recreational opportunities for Washingtonians.
