First Splash: BIPOC Introduction to Sea Kayaking

Our History is Tied to the Water
We’ve always been people of the water. From the ingenious Arctic hunting techniques developed by Indigenous northern cultures to the skilled maritime labor and coastal navigation of African and Indigenous ancestors, our connection to the sea is deep and foundational. While many of us have faced barriers to getting out on the waves in recent generations, this space is a reminder that the water is part of our heritage. We’re not just learning a new skill; we’re returning to a place where we’ve always belonged.
The Magic of the Blue Mind
There’s a reason we feel pulled toward the horizon. It’s what scientists call Blue Mind, a meditative, calming state our brains enter when we’re near or on the water. When you’re in a kayak, just inches from the surface, the rhythmic motion of your paddle and the gentle pulse of the tide work together to lower stress and quiet the noise of daily life. It’s a natural reset for the nervous system. It’s not just a workout; it’s medicine for the soul.
What to Expect
We’ve partnered with the Community Boating Center Bellingham to get Community out on the water in a way that feels safe, supportive, and fun. You don’t need any experience at all to join us. You don’t even have to know how to swim. Really!
First Splash is the gateway. It’s a low-pressure environment where you can learn at your own pace. We’ll introduce you to the boats, the gear, and the basic strokes needed to glide across Bellingham Bay. Whether we’re spotting seals or just feeling the salt spray on our skin, this time is about connecting with the natural world and each other.
Your Kayaking Journey: From First Splash to Self-Reliant

- Part 2: Essentials of Sea Kayaking – Move toward independence. Learn the strokes and maneuvers needed to kayak safely on your own, including cold water safety and communication.
