SUMMARY:In Rhythm with the Water: Sea Kayak Rescues & Recoveries
DESCRIPTION:Our History is Tied to the Water\nWe’ve always been people of the water. From the ingenious Arctic hunting techniques developed by Indigenous northern cultures to the skilled maritime labor and coastal navigation of African and Indigenous ancestors\, our connection to the sea is deep and foundational. While many of us have faced barriers to getting out on the waves in recent generations\, this space is a reminder that the water is part of our heritage. We’re not just learning a new skill; we’re returning to a place where we’ve always belonged. \n\nhttps://thebronzechapter.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/Rescues-Recoveries.mp4\n\n\nThe Magic of the Blue Mind\nThere’s a reason we feel pulled toward the horizon. It’s what scientists call Blue Mind\, a meditative\, calming state our brains enter when we’re near or on the water. When you’re in a kayak\, just inches from the surface\, the rhythmic motion of your paddle and the gentle pulse of the tide work together to lower stress and quiet the noise of daily life. It’s a natural reset for the nervous system. It’s not just a workout; it’s medicine for the soul. \nBuild my confidence \nWhat to Expect\nWe’ve partnered with the Community Boating Center Bellingham to get Community out on the water in a way that feels safe\, supportive\, and fun. You don’t need any experience at all to join us. You don’t even have to know how to swim. Really! \nIn this final part of our series\, we’re focusing on the skills that make you a truly self-reliant paddler. We’ll be on and in the water throughout this class\, starting with a wet exit practice in the shallows so everyone feels comfortable. From there\, we’ll cover paddle float and cowboy self-rescues\, the assisted T-Rescue\, and practice bracing and edging techniques that keep you upright. Understanding the limits of both yourself and your boat is the secret to staying safe and having fun. Please note: Part 2 (Essentials) is a prerequisite for this class. \n\nYour Kayaking Journey: From First Splash to Self-Reliant\nThis class is the final piece of our three-part series. While you can take these at your own pace\, this session is designed to turn the skills you’ve learned into lasting confidence. \n\nPart 1: First Splash – A gentle introduction to equipment and basic paddling.\nPart 2: Essentials of Sea Kayaking – Move toward independence. Learn the strokes and maneuvers needed to kayak safely on your own.\nPart 3: Rescues & Recoveries (This Class!) – The ultimate confidence builder. Learn how to rescue yourself and others\, so you can show up as a capable leader and partner on the water.\n\nGrow my skills\n  \n\nQuick Details\n\nLocation: Bellingham Bay (Fairhaven)\nDate: August 22\, 2026\nTime: 2:30 pm – 5:30 pm\nCost: $25 per person\nCapacity: 12 people max\nAges: 16+\n\nKnow Before You Go\n\nSafety & Gear: All standard equipment\, including your kayak\, wetsuit\, and Personal Flotation Device (PFD)\, is provided.\nPersonal Gear: We’ll be practicing in the water. If you have your own wetsuit or drysuit\, feel free to bring it.\nYour Own Boat: If you’d like to learn in your own kayak\, please email the team at info@boatingcenter.org to let them know ahead of time.\nAccessibility: Participants will need to be able to transition to and from the dock or shore into a sea kayak and be comfortable entering the water for rescue practice. For specific accessibility questions\, the folks at CBCB are happy to help.\n\nSign me up
