SUMMARY:Our Place on the Waves: BIPOC Evening Sailing on Bellingham Bay
DESCRIPTION:Our history is tied to the water.\nHistorically\, Black people used canoes\, worked as sailors (“blackjacks”)\, and navigated waterways\, though they faced significant barriers in\, and exclusion from\, recreational water sports later on.  \nWhile many stories have been erased\, the truth is that Black and brown people have deep roots as master sailors. In the early 19th century\, one out of every five American seamen was Black. For many\, the ocean wasn’t just a workplace\, it was a path to freedom. Frederick Douglass famously escaped slavery disguised as a sailor\, and the first six autobiographies written by Black people in English were penned by seamen. From Crispus Attucks to the nameless mariners who navigated by the stars\, we’ve been outchea on the waves. \n\nhttps://thebronzechapter.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/Evening-sail.mp4 \n\n\nThe Magic of the Blue Mind\nThere’s a reason poets\, musicians\, and dreamers are drawn to the sea. Sailing offers a unique mix of absolute freedom and profound silence. It’s a reset for the mind that pulls us away from the noise of modern life and tucks us into the rhythmic motion of the water. \nWe’re leaning into Blue Mind theory\, which shows that being on the water triggers a meditative\, calming effect on the brain. When you’re out there\, the sight of the horizon and the sound of the hull cutting through the waves naturally lower stress and cortisol. It’s not just travel; it’s medicine. \nGet me on the bay \nWhat to Expect\nWe’ve partnered with the Community Boating Center Bellingham to get our community out on the water. You don’t need to be an expert to join us. You don’t need any experience at all! Whether we’re lucky enough to see seals playing in our bow wave or feeling salt spray on our skin\, this is about connecting with the natural world and each other. \nQuick Details: \n\nDate: June 20\, 2026\nTime: 6-8pm\nLocation: Bellingham Bay (Fairhaven)\nCost: $30 per person\nCapacity: Small groups (4 people max)\nAges: 10+ (Ages 10-16 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian)\n\nKnow Before You Go\n\nSafety & Gear: We’ll provide your Personal Flotation Device (PFD). We’ll also email a list of clothing recommendations to keep you comfortable on the water once you’ve booked.\nAccessibility: Participants need to be able to get in and out of a dinghy and transfer between the dinghy and the sailboat. If you’ve got specific accessibility questions\, the folks at info@boatingcenter.org are happy to help.\n\nLet’s set sail \n  \nJoin the crew

SUMMARY:First Splash: BIPOC Introduction to Sea Kayaking
DESCRIPTION:Our History is Tied to the Water\nWe’ve always been people of the water. From the ingenious Arctic hunting techniques developed by Indigenous northern cultures to the skilled maritime labor and coastal navigation of African and Indigenous ancestors\, our connection to the sea is deep and foundational. While many of us have faced barriers to getting out on the waves in recent generations\, this space is a reminder that the water is part of our heritage. We’re not just learning a new skill; we’re returning to a place where we’ve always belonged. \n\nhttps://thebronzechapter.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/Sea-kayaking.mp4 \n\n\nThe Magic of the Blue Mind\nThere’s a reason we feel pulled toward the horizon. It’s what scientists call Blue Mind\, a meditative\, calming state our brains enter when we’re near or on the water. When you’re in a kayak\, just inches from the surface\, the rhythmic motion of your paddle and the gentle pulse of the tide work together to lower stress and quiet the noise of daily life. It’s a natural reset for the nervous system. It’s not just a workout; it’s medicine for the soul. \nGet me on the Bay \nWhat to Expect\nWe’ve partnered with the Community Boating Center Bellingham to get Community out on the water in a way that feels safe\, supportive\, and fun. You don’t need any experience at all to join us. You don’t even have to know how to swim. Really! \nFirst Splash is the gateway. It’s a low-pressure environment where you can learn at your own pace. We’ll introduce you to the boats\, the gear\, and the basic strokes needed to glide across Bellingham Bay. Whether we’re spotting seals or just feeling the salt spray on our skin\, this time is about connecting with the natural world and each other. \n\nYour Kayaking Journey: From First Splash to Self-Reliant\nThis class is the first of a three-part series designed to methodically grow your skills. You aren’t required to sign up for all three\, but they’re built to take you from your first dip to total confidence. \n\nPart 1: First Splash (This Class!) – A gentle introduction to equipment and basic paddling.\nPart 2: Essentials of Sea Kayaking – Move toward independence. Learn the strokes and maneuvers needed to kayak safely on your own\, including cold water safety and communication.\nPart 3: Rescues & Recoveries – The ultimate confidence builder. Learn how to rescue yourself and others\, so you can show up as a capable leader and partner on the water.\n\nLet’s paddle \n  \n\nQuick Details\n\nLocation: Bellingham Bay (Fairhaven)\nDate: June 21\, 2026\nTime: 1:30 pm – 3:30 pm\nCost: $25 per person\nCapacity: 12 people max\nAges: 16+\n\nKnow Before You Go\n\nSafety & Gear: We’ve got you covered. SUMMARY:Glowing Spirits: BIPOC Bioluminescence Kayak Tour on the Bay
DESCRIPTION:Our History is Tied to the Water\nWhile 74% of communities of color in the U.S. live in nature-deprived areas\, our history tells a different story. We’ve always been people of the coast\, the river\, and the sea. From ancestral navigation using the stars and the sea’s own light to the maritime traditions that sustained our people for generations\, the water is our home. This guided tour isn’t just about seeing something cool; it’s about returning to a place in the natural world that’s long been part of our heritage. \n\n\nThe Magic of the Blue Mind\nBioluminescence—the light produced by living organisms—is pure imagination come to life. As we glide through the dark water\, every stroke of the paddle wakes up glowing plankton\, creating a trail of light in our wake. It’s a sensory experience that leans into Blue Mind theory\, pulling us out of the stress of the concrete jungle and into a state of awe.
We’ll introduce you to the boats\, the gear\, and the basic strokes needed to glide across Bellingham Bay.
\nQuick Details: \n\nDate: July 18\, 2026\nTime: 6-8pm\nLocation: Bellingham Bay (Fairhaven)\nCost: $30 per person\nCapacity: Small groups (4 people max)\nAges: 10+ (Ages 10-16 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian)\n\nKnow Before You Go\n\nSafety & Gear: We’ll provide your Personal Flotation Device (PFD).

SUMMARY:Luminous Collective: BIPOC Bioluminescence MegaSUP Tour on the Bay
DESCRIPTION:Our History is Tied to the Water\nWhile 74% of communities of color in the U.S. live in nature-deprived areas\, our history tells a different story. We’ve always been people of the coast\, the river\, and the sea. From ancestral navigation using the stars and the sea’s own light to the maritime traditions that sustained our people for generations\, the water is our home. This guided tour isn’t just about seeing something cool; it’s about returning to a place in the natural world that’s been part of our heritage since the beginning. \n\n\nThe Magic of the Blue Mind\nBioluminescence – the light produced by living organisms – is pure imagination come to life. As we glide through the dark water\, every stroke of the paddle wakes up glowing plankton\, creating a trail of light in our wake. It’s a sensory experience that leans into Blue Mind theory\, pulling us out of the stress of the concrete jungle and into a state of awe. This isn’t just a tour; it’s a reset for your nervous system and a reminder of the magic that exists in the natural world. \nGet me on the water \nWhat to Expect\nWe’ve partnered with the Community Boating Center Bellingham to lead this immersive\, guided nighttime experience. This isn’t a formal class\, but a communal journey through the glowing waters of Bellingham Bay. More active than a traditional guided paddle\, you’ll move\, explore\, and directly interact with bioluminescent waters. Whether you’re a total novice or a seasoned paddler\, you’re welcome here. You don’t even need to know how to swim to join the fun. \nWhat makes this guided tour special is Community Boating Center’s new MegaSUPs! These are massive\, stable\, floating platforms that can accommodate 4 to 10 guests each. They transform a typically solo activity into a high-energy\, shared adventure. Our time together flows with a welcome circle\, an introduction to the gear\, and a safety briefing before we launch towards darkness to play in the light. Because we’re on big boards\, it’s a unique way to connect\, laugh\, and experience the magic of the bay as one collective. \nWearing wetsuits\, you’ll be able to safely slip into the water\, awakening glowing organisms with every splash and stroke. \nParticipants should be comfortable maintaining balance (standing or sitting) on a giant paddleboard. Our group will work together to steadily paddle for about 40 minutes to reach the best location to experience the living light. \nQuick Details\n\nLocation: Bellingham Bay (Fairhaven)\nDate: July 25\, 2026\nTime: 8:30 pm – 11:30 pm\nCost: $50 per person\nCapacity: 8-10 people depending on size of individuals (4 adults per board is typical; kids can be incorporated)\nAges: 10+ (Ages 10-16 must be accompanied by an adult)\n\nJoin the collective glow \n  \nKnow Before You Go\n\nSafety & Gear: We provide the MegaSUPs\, paddles\, wetsuits\, and personal flotation devices (PFDs). If you have your own wetsuit or drysuit let CBCB know. These boards are incredibly stable and can support up to 1\,700 pounds each.\nClothing: You’ll receive clothing recommendations plus suggested comfort items (like snacks\, a towel\, and a change of clothes) after you register.\nAges & Ratios: If you’re bringing kids\, we require at least a 1:1 adult-to-child ratio for children who can’t paddle on their own or share the space responsibly with the group.\nAccessibility: Participants will need to be able to transition to and from the dock or shore onto the MegaSUP platform. If you’ve got specific questions about physical movements or accessibility\, the team is wonderful and happy to help.\n\nSign me up

\nQuick Details: \n\nDate: August 15\, 2026\nTime: 6-8pm\nLocation: Bellingham Bay (Fairhaven)\nCost: $30 per person\nCapacity: Small groups (4 people max)\nAges: 10+ (Ages 10-16 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian)\n\nKnow Before You Go\n\nSafety & Gear: We’ll provide your Personal Flotation Device (PFD).

SUMMARY:Rock and Role: A BIPOC Geology Camp Retreat in Ellensburg
DESCRIPTION:Unearth the Stories Beneath Your Feet.\nAugust 21-23\, 2026 | Ellensburg\, WA\nYou constantly view miraculous scenery. Washington State is drop-dead beautiful. And if you’re like us\, you look at our area’s massive cliffs and towering mountains and wonder\, “Whoa\, how did that happen?” If you wish you knew the stories behind the miraculous\, we have a solution! Rock and Role: A BIPOC Geology Camp Retreat in Ellensburg! \nYou’re walking right past stories of massive lava flows\, mega floods\, and volcanic explosions that shaped the ground you stand on. It’s time to get more of the story. \nIt’s time to get away from the textbook. If you think geology is boring books and dusty classrooms\, we’re about to change your life. We invite you to dig in the dirt\, reach into the water\, rub spit on a rock\, and watch the colors pop. Whether you’re 7 or 70\, this is your invitation to get messy and get curious with the whole family! \n🌿 The Transformation: Become an Earth Detective\nRock and Role is an intergenerational celebration of our connection to land and water. For one incredible weekend\, you won’t just be a tourist; you’ll be an Earth Detective. \nFrom the unfathomable bigness of Mount Tahoma to a pebble on the beach\, every piece of the Earth has a secret to tell. And it’ll blow your mind how far those pieces have traveled just to get to you. \nWarning: You’ll be having so much fun (“immersed in WOW”)\, you won’t even realize you’re mastering critical thinking\, connecting with deep history\, and seeing yourself as a true relative of the land. \n✊🏾 Why This Matters\nWe’re writing ourselves into the story. Historically\, geoscience hasn’t always welcomed people of color. That era is over. We created Rock and Role not just to connect and introduce you to geology\, but to prove that science belongs to us\, too. \nThis is the only POC-centering geology camp in the United States. We’re partnering with the most engaging voices in the field – including one of the few women of color geology doctorates in the nation – to create a space where expertise and culture collide. We aren’t just visiting the landscape; we’re learning to read it. \n\n\nhttps://thebronzechapter.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/Geology-Ellensburg.mp4 \n\n\n🔥 The Experience: Chill\, Learn\, Connect\nForget stiff academic gatherings. This is a joyful retreat. You’ll spend the weekend at Lazy F Camp and Retreat Center in mesmerizing Manastash Canyon. We handle the details so you can handle the discovery. \n\nChop It Up With Down-To-Earth Guides: Hang out with PBS host Nick Zentner and Dr. Hannah Shamloo. Riff on geology theories\, think in timelines of millions of years\, and ask the questions you’ve always wanted to ask.\nField Trips: Go on guided explorations of Central Washington’s incredible landscape. Nick always has surprises for us!\nNourishment: We provide 5 delicious meals (Friday dinner through Sunday breakfast).\nComfort: Stay in the Trading Post\, a cozy dorm-style lodge (bunkbeds\, full kitchen\, bathrooms)\, or pitch a tent on the grass if you prefer the open air.\nCommunity: Fireside chats\, new friends\, and a safe space where you can be your full and authentic self.\n\n  \nSIGN ME UP! \n  \n👥 Meet our Geology Experts \nDr. Hannah Shamloo (Assistant Professor of Geology\, CWU). Hannah is a force of nature. Her jam is studying the chemistry of erupted material from volcanoes to reconstruct the timing of explosive events. She’s passionate about how volcanoes change the landscape and how magmas fuel volcanoes. She’s here to show you exactly how powerful you are. \nNick Zentner (Lecturer in Geology\, CWU & host of PBS’s “Nick on the Rocks“). Nick’s an Earth Detective. With 30+ years of teaching\, he uses rocks as clues to solve the mysteries of how our ground is continuously changing. He brings high-key excitement and a contagious love for the natural world. \n⚠️ Safety and Enjoyment\nCome as you are. There’s no minimum or maximum age or fitness requirement\, and you don’t need to be an athlete. \nOur Guidance: To get the most out of this experience\, everyone needs to be able to walk unassisted on moderate hiking trails with loose soil and maintain stable footing. We also ask that children be ready to contribute positively to the group dynamic (curiosity is a must!). \n\n🗓️ Event Details\nDates: August 21-23\, 2026\nCheck-In: Friday @ 4:00 PM | Check-Out: Sunday @ 11:00 AM\nLocation: Lazy F Camp and Retreat Center (Ellensburg\, WA)\nCapacity: Strictly limited to 40 people. \n\n🎟️ Secure Your Spot\nChoose the tier that fits your life. \nPAY IN FULL \n$485 per person (Supports the event at full cost)\n$250 per person (Subsidized rate made possible by donors) \nPAYMENT PLAN \nA $50 Deposit locks in your spot. Pay the rest over time (Full balance due July 21). \nGROUP DISCOUNT \nBringing your favorite people? Save 20% when you register 5+ people together. Email us for the discount code! \n🦋 FAMILY SPONSORSHIP (Enter to Win!) We’re thrilled to provide sponsorship for 2 families (up to 5 people each) to attend at NO COST. Drawing Deadline: May 20 \n  \nYES! I’m Ready to Rock! \n  \n\n⛰️ The Earth Is Calling\nAll you have to do is show up and dig in. Join us for a weekend of discovery\, connection\, and Black and brown joy. \nWHAT THE COMMUNITY IS SAYING: \n“An event about natural science that supports our BIPOC opportunities while you support the community you are apart of.” – J. Moorman \n“It was a place where black and brown people could go and safely nerd out about geology and volcanoes\, and also talk about daily challenges.” – K. Meredith \n“Access to nature is healing. Being in community is critical to our well-being. Denice Rochelle and Nick Zentner have joined forces to co-create a culture of love for our environment and community. My kids (10 and 12) LOVED learning about rocks and this opportunity planted seeds of curiosity and confidence to pursue more environmental learning.” – M. Koller \n“Imagine learning some geology by the best geology teachers in the nation\, and then have a chance to ask questions around a campfire or at breakfast. It’s hard to beat.” – H. Brameus \n  \nYES! I’m Ready to Rock!

This isn’t just a tour; it’s a reset for your nervous system and a reminder of the magic that exists in the natural world. \nShow me the glow \n  \nWhat to Expect\nWe’ve partnered with the Community Boating Center Bellingham to lead this guided experience. We’ll go over safety and our route before launching towards darkness to play in the light. We use tandem (2-person) sea kayaks for maximum stability.
