SUMMARY:Rock and Role: A BIPOC Geology Camp Retreat in Ellensburg
DESCRIPTION:Unearth the Stories Beneath Your Feet.\nAugust 21-23\, 2026 | Ellensburg\, WA\nYou constantly view miraculous scenery. Washington State is drop-dead beautiful. And if you’re like us\, you look at our area’s massive cliffs and towering mountains and wonder\, “Whoa\, how did that happen?” If you wish you knew the stories behind the miraculous\, we have a solution! Rock and Role: A BIPOC Geology Camp Retreat in Ellensburg! \nYou’re walking right past stories of massive lava flows\, mega floods\, and volcanic explosions that shaped the ground you stand on. It’s time to get more of the story. \nIt’s time to get away from the textbook. If you think geology is boring books and dusty classrooms\, we’re about to change your life. We invite you to dig in the dirt\, reach into the water\, rub spit on a rock\, and watch the colors pop. Whether you’re 7 or 70\, this is your invitation to get messy and get curious with the whole family! \n🌿 The Transformation: Become an Earth Detective\nRock and Role is an intergenerational celebration of our connection to land and water. For 3 days and 2 nights\, we won’t just be tourists; we’ll be Earth Detectives. \nFrom the unfathomable bigness of Mount Tahoma to a pebble on the beach\, every piece of the Earth has a secret to tell. And it’ll blow your mind how far those pieces have traveled just to get to you. \nWarning: You’ll be having so much fun (“immersed in WOW”)\, you won’t even realize you’re mastering critical thinking\, connecting with deep history\, and seeing yourself as a true relative of the land. \n✊🏾 Why This Matters\nWe’re pulling up and writing ourselves into the story. Historically\, geoscience hasn’t always welcomed people of color. That era is over. We created Rock and Role not just to connect and introduce you to geology\, but to prove that science belongs to us\, too. \nThis is the only POC-centering geology sleepover summer camp we’re aware of in the United States. We’re partnering with the most engaging voices in the field – including one of the few women of color geology doctorates in the nation – to create a space where expertise and culture collide. We aren’t just visiting the landscape; we’re learning to read it. \n\n\nhttps://thebronzechapter.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/Geology-Ellensburg.mp4\n\n\n🔥 The Experience: Chill\, Learn\, Connect\nForget stiff academic gatherings. This is a joyful retreat. You’ll spend the weekend at Lazy F Camp and Retreat Center in mesmerizing Manastash Canyon. We handle the details so you can handle the discovery. \n\nChop It Up With Down-To-Earth Guides: Hang out with PBS host Nick Zentner and Dr. Hannah Shamloo. Riff on geology theories\, think in timelines of millions of years\, and ask the questions you’ve always wanted to ask.\nField Trips: Go on guided explorations of Central Washington’s incredible landscape. Nick always has surprises for us!\nNourishment: We provide 5 delicious meals (Friday dinner through Sunday breakfast).\nComfort: Stay in the Trading Post\, a cozy dorm-style lodge (bunkbeds\, full kitchen\, bathrooms)\, or pitch a tent on the grass if you prefer the open air.\nCommunity: Fireside chats\, new friends\, and a safe space where you can be your full and authentic self.\n\n  \nSIGN ME UP!\n  \n👥 Meet our Geology Experts \nDr. Hannah Shamloo (Assistant Professor of Geology\, CWU). Hannah is a force of nature. Her jam is studying the chemistry of erupted material from volcanoes to reconstruct the timing of explosive events. She’s passionate about how volcanoes change the landscape and how magmas fuel volcanoes. She’s here to show you exactly how powerful you are. \nNick Zentner (Lecturer in Geology\, CWU & host of PBS’s “Nick on the Rocks“). Nick’s an Earth Detective. With 30+ years of teaching\, he uses rocks as clues to solve the mysteries of how our ground is continuously changing. He brings high-key excitement and a contagious love for the natural world. \n⚠️ Safety and Enjoyment\nCome as you are. There’s no minimum or maximum age or fitness requirement\, and you don’t need to be an athlete. \nOur Guidance: To get the most out of this experience\, everyone needs to be able to walk unassisted on moderate hiking trails with loose soil and maintain stable footing. We also ask that children be ready to contribute positively to the group dynamic (curiosity is a must!). \n\n🗓️ Event Details\nDates: August 21-23\, 2026\nCheck-In: Friday @ 4:00 PM | Check-Out: Sunday @ 11:00 AM\nLocation: Lazy F Camp and Retreat Center (Ellensburg\, WA)\nCapacity: Strictly limited to 40 people. \n\n🎟️ Secure Your Spot\nChoose the tier that fits your life. \nPAY IN FULL \n$485 per person (Supports the event at full cost)\n$250 per person (Subsidized rate made possible by donors) \nPAYMENT PLAN \nA $50 Deposit locks in your spot. Pay the rest over time (Full balance due July 21). \nGROUP DISCOUNT \nBringing your favorite people? Save 20% when you register 5+ people together. Email us for the discount code! \n🦋 FAMILY SPONSORSHIP (Enter to Win!) We’re thrilled to provide sponsorship for 2 families (up to 5 people each) to attend at NO COST. Drawing Deadline: May 20 \n  \nYES! I’m Ready to Rock!\n  \n\n⛰️ The Earth Is Calling\nAll you have to do is show up and dig in. Join us for a weekend of discovery\, connection\, and Black and brown joy. \nWHAT THE COMMUNITY IS SAYING: \n“An event about natural science that supports our BIPOC opportunities while you support the community you are apart of.” – J. Moorman \n“It was a place where black and brown people could go and safely nerd out about geology and volcanoes\, and also talk about daily challenges.” – K. Meredith \n“Access to nature is healing. Being in community is critical to our well-being. Denice Rochelle and Nick Zentner have joined forces to co-create a culture of love for our environment and community. My kids (10 and 12) LOVED learning about rocks and this opportunity planted seeds of curiosity and confidence to pursue more environmental learning.” – M. Koller \n“Imagine learning some geology by the best geology teachers in the nation\, and then have a chance to ask questions around a campfire or at breakfast. It’s hard to beat.” – H. Brameus \n  \nYES! I’m Ready to Rock!

SUMMARY:Olympic Coast Backpacking for Beginners
DESCRIPTION:Olympic Peninsula Here We Come!\nAnd we’re inviting 10 people to join us for a 4-day\, 3-night beginner-friendly backpack excursion around the Ozette Triangle\, stunningly beautiful land on the Olympic Peninsula within Olympic National Park and the Makah Indian Reservation. We’re intentionally centering BIPOC community and warmly welcoming all gender representations. It’s going to be supportive\, scenic\, and so much fun. \nWe’ll meander the full loop crossing cedar-planked boardwalks\, through the lush coastal trees\, and onto the awe-inspiring beach. \nIf you’ve never visited this part of Washington State\, you will LOVE it. We’ll go over all logistics together! \nDates: September 4 to 7\, 2026 \nContribution: $75 for one person or $100 for two people registering together. \n\nThe Vibe \nSince our main goal is assisting you in becoming a safe\, responsible\, self-sufficient backpacker\, think of your excursion leaders\, Lindsay Huettman and Denice Rochelle\, as your guidance\, not your guides. We’re showing up to help you learn\, not to do it for you. This is an intentional space created for you to expand your outdoor narrative in a peer-led environment. \nConnecting with the forest\, mountain\, and water\, we’ll have space to be ourselves\, unlearn\, re-learn\, and dial in hiking and camping skills\, while bravely comfortably\, and joyfully leaning into play that opens paths to ecological awareness and the living world. \nOur biggest hope is that by the end of this trip\, you’ll feel confident returning to these same trails with your own family and friends. \n\nThe Experience\nWashington State has three National Parks of which Olympic National Park is one. \nPicture walking through thick\, verdant coastal forests\, crossing Ahlstrom’s Prairie\, and stepping out onto a dramatic coastline. We’ll explore Tskawahyah Island\, check out tide pools teeming with marine life\, marvel at the Wedding Rocks petroglyphs\, and absorb those unbeatable Pacific sunset views. \nBefore\, during\, and after we’ll cover essentials like preparation\, group and self-care on the trail\, trail etiquette\, setting up camp\, Leave No Trace principles\, trail hazards\, and some naturalist awareness of the local ecology. \nI’m Down Let’s Go! \n\nOur Plan for the Weekend\nBe prepared to hike about 3 miles each day with an average elevation gain of 400 to 600 feet. The trails are super popular with beginner and seasoned hikers and backpackers. The trail’s framed by massive spruce and cedar forests\, the open prairie\, and a rugged\, tide-dependent coastline. \n\nDay 1 (Friday): We’ll spend the first night at a property near the trailhead for ease of group travel. (Address will be provided to our group)\nDay 2 (Saturday): We’ll drive to the trailhead in the morning. We’ll hike about 3 miles to the point\, set up camp\, and spend our first night listening to the ocean.\nDay 3 (Sunday): We’ll hike about 3 miles on the second leg of the triangle and set up camp for our second night on the beach.\nDay 4 (Monday): After a leisurely breakfast\, we’ll break camp\, hike our last 3 miles along the final leg of the trail back to the parking lot\, and say our until next time’s.\n\n\nWhat You Need to Know\n\nPrep Sessions: \nWe definitely recommend that you attend our 2-hour Camping Equipment Demystified event on May 9 to help you prepare for this excursion. We’ll be arranging in-person skills and prep sessions to make sure everyone is totally ready for the trail. (Dates and locations will be coordinated with our group)\nThe Basics: Be age 18+\, have reliable transportation\, and have experience car camping and day hiking. Be able to comfortably hike at least 4 miles each way carrying a loaded backpack and potable water on an undulating trail at a leisurely\, conversational pace.\nEquipment Needs: Learning what equipment to have for the environment we want to go to is part of becoming a self-reliant backpacker. We’ll go over needs and the various ways to get equipment to satisfy those needs\, including leaning into the abundance of your friends\, cousins\, or neighbors to borrow items\, or investing in core items if you’re able. We may be able to help fill in your gaps from our small equipment library. Equipment is an investment in your safety\, comfort\, and confidence and we want to set you up for long-term success.\nPermits: All overnighters must have a Wilderness Permit which we’ll secure for our group.\nCarpooling: We’ll provide a link later on so folks can self-organize rideshares.\n\nSign me up! \nSign me up!

SUMMARY:Introduction to Wild Plant First Aid for Hikers and Backpackers: Autumn Edition
DESCRIPTION:Our ancestral roots in the dirt and the plants growing around us are ancient beyond record. Erosion\, erasure\, epistemicide\, modern life\, and concrete jungles combine to sever those bonds. The result: our feeling disconnected from the lands and waters that hold us. \nIf you wanna shake up sleepy ancestral curiosity and feel more oneness with nature\, sign up. \nConnect me! \nWe’ll share snacks and knowledge about the abundant plants\, trees\, and lichens across the Pacific Northwest that you can ethically harvest for health and healing\, and share book resources that can help you continue discovering\, learning\, and sharing. \n \nDuring this humble path towards reconnection\, we’ll meander through the park exploring leaves\, smell sap\, and discover ways the forest provides\, organically growing a closer relationship with nature and the natural world. \nWe’ll talk about the basics of identifying healing plants\, spotting toxic look-alikes\, harvesting with deep respect for the ecosystem\, and reciprocity.
