SUMMARY:Pete Lake Beginner Backpack
DESCRIPTION:Pete Lake We’re Comin’\nAnd we’re inviting 6 people to join us for a 3-day\, 2-night beginner-friendly backpack excursion through the Alpine Lakes Wilderness. We’re intentionally centering BIPOC community and warmly welcoming all gender representations. It’s going to be supportive\, scenic\, and so much fun. \nDates: July 24-26\, 2026 \nContribution: $75 for one person or $100 for two people registering together. \n\n\nOur Vibe Together \n\n\nSince our main goal is assisting you in becoming a safe\, responsible\, self-sufficient backpacker\, think of your excursion leaders\, Denice Rochelle and Stacy Sarver\, as your guidance\, not your guides. We’re showing up to help you learn\, not to do it for you. This is an intentional space created for you to expand your outdoor narrative in a peer-led environment. \nConnecting with the forest\, mountain\, and water\, we’ll have space to be ourselves\, unlearn\, re-learn\, and dial in hiking and camping skills\, while bravely comfortably\, and joyfully leaning into play that opens paths to ecological awareness and the living world. \nOur biggest hope is that by the end of this trip\, you’ll feel confident returning to these same trails with your own family and friends. \n\n\nThe Pete Lake Trail Experience\nPicture walking along a scenic trail that winds through massive\, mature Douglas Fir\, Engelmann Spruce\, and Western Hemlock\, complete with a few minor water crossings. Clear skies permitting\, we’ll catch gorgeous views of Big Summit Chief and Chimney Rock right as we hit the alpine shore. \n \nBefore\, during\, and after we’ll cover essentials like preparation\, group and self-care on the trail\, trail etiquette\, setting up camp\, Leave No Trace principles\, trail hazards\, and some naturalist awareness of the local ecology. \nLocated just off I-90 at about 2\,986 feet above sea level\, Pete Lake forms the headwater of the Cooper River and sits within the stunning Alpine Lakes Wilderness. We’ll find tent spots along the shore\, catching breezes on rocky overlooks and listening to the fresh water of Lemah Creek. \nLet’s Backpack! \n\nOur Plan for the Weekend\nBe prepared to comfortably carry your loaded pack up to 5 miles each way with a gentle 400 feet of elevation gain. The trail’s framed by old-growth conifers\, river views\, and a peaceful forest ambiance. It’s incredibly popular with beginner and seasoned backpackers! \n\nDay 1 (Friday): We’ll meet in Roslyn at 11am for an equipment check and to caravan together. We’ll park at the Pete Lake Trailhead by noon and hike the trail to our campsites. After we pitch our tents\, look forward to relaxing and exploring the land.\nDay 2 (Saturday): Enjoy the beauty. Think alpine scenery\, stunning views\, and glacier-fed tranquility.\nDay 3 (Sunday): After a leisurely breakfast\, we’ll break camp\, retrace our 5 miles back to the cars\, caravan back to Roslyn\, and say our until next time’s.\n\n \n\nWhat You Need to Know\n\nPrep Sessions: We definitely recommend that you attend our 2-hour Camping Equipment Demystified event on May 9 to help you prepare for this excursion. We’ll be arranging in-person skills and prep sessions to make sure everyone is totally ready for the trail. (Dates and locations will be coordinated with our group)\nThe Basics: Be age 18+\, have reliable transportation\, and have experience car camping and day hiking. Be able to comfortably hike at least 5 miles each way carrying a loaded backpack (average 25-35 pounds) on an undulating trail at a leisurely\, conversational pace.\nEquipment Needs: Learning what equipment to have for the environment we want to go to is part of becoming a self-reliant backpacker. We’ll go over needs and the various ways to get equipment to satisfy those needs\, including leaning into the abundance of your friends\, cousins\, or neighbors to borrow items\, or investing in core items if you’re able. We may be able to help fill in your gaps from our small equipment library. Equipment is an investment in your safety\, comfort\, and confidence and we want to set you up for long-term success.\nPermits: We’ll fill out a free wilderness permit at the trailhead. Northwest Forest Pass or America The Beautiful pass to park a car. We’ll go over this during prep.\nCarpooling: We’ll provide a link later on so folks can self-organize rideshares.\n\nSign me up! \nSign me up!

SUMMARY:Our Place on the Waves: BIPOC Evening Sailing on Bellingham Bay
DESCRIPTION:Our history is tied to the water.\nHistorically\, Black people used canoes\, worked as sailors (“blackjacks”)\, and navigated waterways\, though they faced significant barriers in\, and exclusion from\, recreational water sports later on.  \nWhile many stories have been erased\, the truth is that Black and brown people have deep roots as master sailors. In the early 19th century\, one out of every five American seamen was Black. For many\, the ocean wasn’t just a workplace\, it was a path to freedom. Frederick Douglass famously escaped slavery disguised as a sailor\, and the first six autobiographies written by Black people in English were penned by seamen. From Crispus Attucks to the nameless mariners who navigated by the stars\, we’ve been outchea on the waves. \n\nhttps://thebronzechapter.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/Evening-sail.mp4\n\n\nThe Magic of the Blue Mind\nThere’s a reason poets\, musicians\, and dreamers are drawn to the sea. Sailing offers a unique mix of absolute freedom and profound silence. It’s a reset for the mind that pulls us away from the noise of modern life and tucks us into the rhythmic motion of the water. \nWe’re leaning into Blue Mind theory\, which shows that being on the water triggers a meditative\, calming effect on the brain. When you’re out there\, the sight of the horizon and the sound of the hull cutting through the waves naturally lower stress and cortisol. It’s not just travel; it’s medicine. \nGet me on the bay \nWhat to Expect\nWe’ve partnered with the Community Boating Center Bellingham to get our community out on the water. You don’t need to be an expert to join us. You don’t need any experience at all! Whether we’re lucky enough to see seals playing in our bow wave or feeling salt spray on our skin\, this is about connecting with the natural world and each other. \nQuick Details: \n\nDate: July 18\, 2026\nTime: 6-8pm\nLocation: Bellingham Bay (Fairhaven)\nCost: $30 per person\nCapacity: Small groups (4 people max)\nAges: 10+ (Ages 10-16 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian)\n\nKnow Before You Go\n\nSafety & Gear: We’ll provide your Personal Flotation Device (PFD). We’ll also email a list of clothing recommendations to keep you comfortable on the water once you’ve booked.\nAccessibility: Participants need to be able to get in and out of a dinghy and transfer between the dinghy and the sailboat. If you’ve got specific accessibility questions\, the folks at info@boatingcenter.org are happy to help.\n\nLet’s set sail\n  \nJoin the crew

SUMMARY:Glowing Spirits: BIPOC Bioluminescence Kayak Tour on the Bay
DESCRIPTION:Our History is Tied to the Water\nWhile 74% of communities of color in the U.S. live in nature-deprived areas\, our history tells a different story. We’ve always been people of the coast\, the river\, and the sea. From ancestral navigation using the stars and the sea’s own light to the maritime traditions that sustained our people for generations\, the water is our home. This guided tour isn’t just about seeing something cool; it’s about returning to a place in the natural world that’s long been part of our heritage. \n\n\nThe Magic of the Blue Mind\nBioluminescence—the light produced by living organisms—is pure imagination come to life. As we glide through the dark water\, every stroke of the paddle wakes up glowing plankton\, creating a trail of light in our wake. It’s a sensory experience that leans into Blue Mind theory\, pulling us out of the stress of the concrete jungle and into a state of awe. This isn’t just a tour; it’s a reset for your nervous system and a reminder of the magic that exists in the natural world. \nShow me the glow \n  \nWhat to Expect\nWe’ve partnered with the Community Boating Center Bellingham to lead this guided experience. This isn’t a formal class\, but a communal journey through the glowing waters of Bellingham Bay. Whether you’re a total novice or a seasoned paddler\, you’re welcome here. You don’t even need to know how to swim to join the fun. \nOur time together flows with a welcome circle\, followed by a quick introduction to the gear and paddle strokes. We’ll go over safety and our route before launching towards darkness to play in the light. We use tandem (2-person) sea kayaks for maximum stability. If you’re coming with your crew\, choose your boat partner wisely—but don’t worry if you’re coming solo; you’ll find plenty of friendly faces here. \nQuick Details\n\nLocation: Bellingham Bay (Fairhaven)\nDates: June 27\, 2026\nTime: 8:30pm – 11:30pm\nCost: $50 per person\nCapacity: 12 people max – these tours are notorious for filling fast!\nAges: 10+ (Ages 10-16 must be accompanied by an adult)\n\nI want to see the magic \n  \nKnow Before You Go\n\nSafety & Gear: We provide the stable tandem kayaks\, paddles\, and Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs).\nClothing: Plan for your feet\, calves\, and hands to get wet. You’ll receive clothing recommendations to keep you warm and cozy\, plus suggested comfort items (like snacks\, towel\, and change of clothes)\, after you register.\nAges & Ratios: If you’re bringing kids\, we require at least a 1:1 adult-to-child ratio for children who can’t paddle on their own or share paddling a boat responsibly with an adult partner.\nAccessibility: Participants will need to be able to transition to and from the dock or shore into a sea kayak.
\n\nhttps://thebronzechapter.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/Evening-sail.mp4 \n\n\nThe Magic of the Blue Mind\nThere’s a reason poets\, musicians\, and dreamers are drawn to the sea. \nQuick Details: \n\nDate: June 20\, 2026\nTime: 6-8pm\nLocation: Bellingham Bay (Fairhaven)\nCost: $30 per person\nCapacity: Small groups (4 people max)\nAges: 10+ (Ages 10-16 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian)\n\nKnow Before You Go\n\nSafety & Gear: We’ll provide your Personal Flotation Device (PFD). We’ll also email a list of clothing recommendations to keep you comfortable on the water once you’ve booked.\nAccessibility: Participants need to be able to get in and out of a dinghy and transfer between the dinghy and the sailboat. If you’ve got specific accessibility questions\, the folks at info@boatingcenter.org are happy to help.\n\nLet’s set sail \n  \nJoin the crew

SUMMARY:Virtual Travel Journal: a casual connection to the Bahamas and shark conservation
DESCRIPTION:Let’s chillax together for an hour of dreamy adventure connection after work on Thursday\, June 4th\, from 6:00pm – 7:00pm PDT on Zoom. \nJillian Morris-Brake\, an acclaimed marine biologist\, award-winning underwater photographer\, and founder of Sharks4Kids\, has spent more than 20 years working directly with sharks. She’s on a mission to dismantle fear-based stereotypes that put these majestic\, vital ocean guardians at risk. \nDuring a recent dive trip to Bimini\, Bahamas\, to celebrate Black Futures Month with Gabby Shepard’s group\, I experienced the magic of swimming with vulnerable and critically endangered Great Hammerhead\, Caribbean Reef\, and Atlantic Nurse sharks and a super interesting presentation from Jillian. \nSharks have roamed the oceans for hundreds of millions of years (long before trees or dinosaurs existed!)\, yet misconceptions and Hollywood’s 50-year-old “Jaws effect” fear-mongering films have pushed many shark species to the brink of extinction. On June 4th for one hour from sunny Bimini\, Bahamas\, Jillian will share how education\, curiosity\, responsible ecotourism\, and KIDS are joining forces to rewrite that narrative. \n\n📷 by Janelle Van Ruiten \nJoin us and find out Thursday\, June 4th\, from 6:00pm – 7:00pm PDT on Zoom. \nThe gathering is free\, but we still need you to sign up so we can send you the Zoom link. \nSign me up! \nThis Virtual Travel Journal is completely kid-friendly\, so please bring the kids and share this event with all the parents you know! Jillian will share photos\, information\, stories\, and educational resources to inspire you and the next generation of ocean advocates (i.e. kids) that you invite for the hour. \nCome find out: \n\nDid a shark really touch my head?\nWhat’s it like to swim with Great Hammerhead sharks?\nDo Lemon sharks smell like lemons?\nAre Tiger sharks yellow?\nWhat do kids say Lemon sharks feel like?\nCan guided shark diving actually save local coastal economies?\n\nPull up for this free community gathering and find out on Thursday\, June 4\, 6:00pm – 7:00pm PDT. Bring your dinner\, evening sip\, and questions. \nWe’ll also have a giveaway! \nTake me to the Bahamas! \n\n📷 by Jonathan Galendez

SUMMARY:Town to Trails: From Fear to Fearless
DESCRIPTION:A Practical Personal Safety Workshop For Everyday Life & The Outdoors\nMay 16 2026 | Limited to 16 seats\nOver the years hundreds of women of color have told me they don’t do things they want to do because they don’t feel safe and/or don’t know how to deflect encounters or create safe-feeling boundaries. That’s why I connected with Black personal safety expert instructor Nicole Snell and created Town to Trails: From Fear to Fearless | A Personal Safety Workshop For Everyday Life & The Outdoors. \nMore than 70% women and nonbinary individuals assigned female at birth alter or avoid outdoor activities or exercise routines due to safety concerns. More than 90% of female runners report safety concerns. Less than 50% of Black women report feeling safe walking alone at night in their own residential areas. \nIf feeling unsafe has ever kept you from living the life you’ve dreamed of\, we have a solution! Town to Trails: From Fear to Fearless! \nYou were made to move freely. But when was the last time you hesitated to go on a solo outdoor activity? Hesitated to walk to your car at night? Hesitated to let your daughter explore the world because it feels too heavy? \nIf the thought of “what if” is shrinking your world\, we’re here to give you an assortment of tools that can help you shift those thoughts to “let’s go.” \nIt’s time to stop looking over your shoulder and start owning your space. You deserve to move through your personal\, professional\, and outdoor lives with absolute certainty. Town to Trails isn’t just a workshop; it’s a roadmap to unleashing your curiosity and freedom. \n\n🦋 The Transformation\nIn just 6.5 hours\, you won’t just learn “tips.” You’ll access the power that already lives inside you. \nWhile this healing-informed\, custom-designed experience was created to center BIPOC women and non-binary people age 16+\, non-BIPOC allies who align with our mission are welcome! Whether you are 16 or 65\, an avid hiker or a city walker\, this is for you. We believe every body is a capable body. \nImagine waking up the day after this workshop. Imagine feeling a sense of calm readiness instead of anxiety. Imagine knowing that no matter where you go – the grocery store\, a campsite\, or your workplace – you have the tools to handle it. \nWe guarantee you’ll leave this room different than when you entered. Everyone does. \n \n\nSIGN ME UP! \n  \n🔥 What You Will Master\nForget complex martial arts routines that take years to learn. We focus on instant IMPACT. \n\nThe Power of “NO”: Discover how to use your voice and body language to stop a confrontation before it starts.\nReal-World Defense: Practice full-voice\, full-force scenarios with professional instructors. (Campers! You’ll even learn to defend yourself from inside a sleeping bag!)\nZero Judgment: No fitness required. No prior experience needed. Just come as you are – curious\, nervous\, or ready for change. We got you.\n\n\n🫱🏾‍🫲🏽 Meet Your Instructors\nYou deserve leaders who know the reality. Nicole Snell & Matt Harris aren’t just Certified IMPACT Personal Safety Instructors; they are Black leaders who bring lived experience\, compassion\, and unparalleled expertise. We’ve created a brave container where you can practice safely – all physical scenarios are done with them\, never with other participants. \nWatch Nicole Snell’s TEDx talk! \n \n\n🥗 We Nourish You Completely\nWe take care of the details so you can focus on you. Lunch and energizing snacks are included. \n\n📍 The Essentials\n\nDate: Saturday\, May 16\, 2026\nTime: 9am – 3:30pm\nLocation: Bow\, WA (beautiful area just 1.5 hours north of Seattle). Getting to hear the education\, along with watching the instructors\, getting to practice every drill several times\, and also getting to watch all my classmates practice was so very educational. Will definitely be strongly recommending this workshop to friends and colleagues. I would say this is the most valuable “outdoors” workshop I have ever taken!” – M. Kim \n“We are so capable!!!! I spend a lot of time on public transportation and feel that the tools we learned in this class are so relevant and useful for navigating everyday life.” – M. Dwyer \n“It’s a super valuable and empowering workshop with other BIPOC female or non-binary identifying participants in a safe space. I learned so much and felt more confident in life afterwards and I would recommend it to everyone.” – X. Liu \n“This course provided a holistic approach and understanding of being outdoors as a woman. I was able to apply the skills being taught to curated or specific outdoor situations I had been in or am worried about being in. I was carefully (and lovingly) coached through each physical interaction or activity\, so my mind was focused on continuing to walk through the procedure and movements rather than trying to remember the order of everything. It was an accessible\, relevant\, and cheerful environment that changed my mind about protection or self-defense courses!!!” – M. Perez \n  \nYES! Let’s Make 2026 Fearless! \nYES! Let’s Make 2026 Fearless! \n

We’ll also talk about my experience visiting Catalina Island as a tourist\, and our shared desire to scuba dive the area’s kelp forests. \nNicole is lead personal safety instructor with IMPACT Personal Safety and owner of Girls Fight Back AND one of the empowering instructors for our Town to Trails: From Fear to Fearless workshop on May 16\, 2026. \nLocated almost 22 miles off the coast of Southern California\, Santa Catalina Island (Pima by the Pima Tongvan people who lived there thousands of years ago) charms visitors with breathtaking ocean views\, gentle hills\, stark cliffs\, free-roaming Bison with a unique film industry backstory\, awesome scuba diving\, and more. \nThe island’s Trans-Catalina Trail is as rugged as the island is beautiful – known for steep ups and downs\, intense sun exposure\, and need for some organizational prowess. \n⛰️ The gathering is free\, but we still need you to sign up so we can send you the Zoom link. \nSign me up! \n \nDid Nicole suffer exposure? Cross paths with the island’s famous free-roaming Bison? Did she have to protect her suppers from 5-pound endemic Island Fox ? How did her legs survive a trail notorious for having zero switchbacks? And did she partake in the island’s famous Buffalo Milk cocktail to celebrate her accomplishment? \nPull up for this free community gathering and find out on Tuesday\, April 28\, 6:30pm – 7:30pm PDT. Bring your supper\, evening sip\, blanket\, and questions. \n \nNicole will share her Virtual Travel Journal photos\, stories\, and tips to inspire curiosity and promote the heart-opening and mind-expanding transformations that travel is known for. \nTake me to Catalina Island!
