SUMMARY:Olympic Coast Backpacking for Beginners
DESCRIPTION:Olympic Peninsula Here We Come!\nAnd we’re inviting 10 people to join us for a 4-day\, 3-night beginner-friendly backpack excursion around the Ozette Triangle\, stunningly beautiful land on the Olympic Peninsula within Olympic National Park and the Makah Indian Reservation. We’re intentionally centering BIPOC community and warmly welcoming all gender representations. It’s going to be supportive\, scenic\, and so much fun. \nWe’ll meander the full loop crossing cedar-planked boardwalks\, through the lush coastal trees\, and onto the awe-inspiring beach. \nIf you’ve never visited this part of Washington State\, you will LOVE it. We’ll go over all logistics together! \nDates: September 4 to 7\, 2026 \nContribution: $75 for one person or $100 for two people registering together. \n\nThe Vibe \nSince our main goal is assisting you in becoming a safe\, responsible\, self-sufficient backpacker\, think of your excursion leaders\, Lindsay Huettman and Denice Rochelle\, as your guidance\, not your guides. We’re showing up to help you learn\, not to do it for you. This is an intentional space created for you to expand your outdoor narrative in a peer-led environment. \nConnecting with the forest\, mountain\, and water\, we’ll have space to be ourselves\, unlearn\, re-learn\, and dial in hiking and camping skills\, while bravely comfortably\, and joyfully leaning into play that opens paths to ecological awareness and the living world. \nOur biggest hope is that by the end of this trip\, you’ll feel confident returning to these same trails with your own family and friends. \n\nThe Experience\nWashington State has three National Parks of which Olympic National Park is one. \nPicture walking through thick\, verdant coastal forests\, crossing Ahlstrom’s Prairie\, and stepping out onto a dramatic coastline. We’ll explore Tskawahyah Island\, check out tide pools teeming with marine life\, marvel at the Wedding Rocks petroglyphs\, and absorb those unbeatable Pacific sunset views. \nBefore\, during\, and after we’ll cover essentials like preparation\, group and self-care on the trail\, trail etiquette\, setting up camp\, Leave No Trace principles\, trail hazards\, and some naturalist awareness of the local ecology. \nI’m Down Let’s Go! \n\nOur Plan for the Weekend\nBe prepared to hike about 3 miles each day with an average elevation gain of 400 to 600 feet. The trails are super popular with beginner and seasoned hikers and backpackers. The trail’s framed by massive spruce and cedar forests\, the open prairie\, and a rugged\, tide-dependent coastline. \n\nDay 1 (Friday): We’ll spend the first night at a property near the trailhead for ease of group travel. (Address will be provided to our group)\nDay 2 (Saturday): We’ll drive to the trailhead in the morning. We’ll hike about 3 miles to the point\, set up camp\, and spend our first night listening to the ocean.\nDay 3 (Sunday): We’ll hike about 3 miles on the second leg of the triangle and set up camp for our second night on the beach.\nDay 4 (Monday): After a leisurely breakfast\, we’ll break camp\, hike our last 3 miles along the final leg of the trail back to the parking lot\, and say our until next time’s.\n\n\nWhat You Need to Know\n\nPrep Sessions: \nWe definitely recommend that you attend our 2-hour Camping Equipment Demystified event on May 9 to help you prepare for this excursion. We’ll be arranging in-person skills and prep sessions to make sure everyone is totally ready for the trail. (Dates and locations will be coordinated with our group)\nThe Basics: Be age 18+\, have reliable transportation\, and have experience car camping and day hiking. Be able to comfortably hike at least 4 miles each way carrying a loaded backpack and potable water on an undulating trail at a leisurely\, conversational pace.\nEquipment Needs: Learning what equipment to have for the environment we want to go to is part of becoming a self-reliant backpacker. We’ll go over needs and the various ways to get equipment to satisfy those needs\, including leaning into the abundance of your friends\, cousins\, or neighbors to borrow items\, or investing in core items if you’re able. We may be able to help fill in your gaps from our small equipment library. Equipment is an investment in your safety\, comfort\, and confidence and we want to set you up for long-term success.\nPermits: All overnighters must have a Wilderness Permit which we’ll secure for our group.\nCarpooling: We’ll provide a link later on so folks can self-organize rideshares.\n\nSign me up! \nSign me up!

SUMMARY:In Rhythm with the Water: Sea Kayak Rescues & Recoveries
DESCRIPTION:Our History is Tied to the Water\nWe’ve always been people of the water. From the ingenious Arctic hunting techniques developed by Indigenous northern cultures to the skilled maritime labor and coastal navigation of African and Indigenous ancestors\, our connection to the sea is deep and foundational. While many of us have faced barriers to getting out on the waves in recent generations\, this space is a reminder that the water is part of our heritage. We’re not just learning a new skill; we’re returning to a place where we’ve always belonged. \n\nhttps://thebronzechapter.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/Rescues-Recoveries.mp4\n\n\nThe Magic of the Blue Mind\nThere’s a reason we feel pulled toward the horizon. It’s what scientists call Blue Mind\, a meditative\, calming state our brains enter when we’re near or on the water. When you’re in a kayak\, just inches from the surface\, the rhythmic motion of your paddle and the gentle pulse of the tide work together to lower stress and quiet the noise of daily life. It’s a natural reset for the nervous system. It’s not just a workout; it’s medicine for the soul. \nBuild my confidence \nWhat to Expect\nWe’ve partnered with the Community Boating Center Bellingham to get Community out on the water in a way that feels safe\, supportive\, and fun. You don’t need any experience at all to join us. You don’t even have to know how to swim. Really! \nIn this final part of our series\, we’re focusing on the skills that make you a truly self-reliant paddler. We’ll be on and in the water throughout this class\, starting with a wet exit practice in the shallows so everyone feels comfortable. From there\, we’ll cover paddle float and cowboy self-rescues\, the assisted T-Rescue\, and practice bracing and edging techniques that keep you upright. Understanding the limits of both yourself and your boat is the secret to staying safe and having fun. Please note: Part 2 (Essentials) is a prerequisite for this class. \n\nYour Kayaking Journey: From First Splash to Self-Reliant\nThis class is the final piece of our three-part series. While you can take these at your own pace\, this session is designed to turn the skills you’ve learned into lasting confidence. \n\nPart 1: First Splash – A gentle introduction to equipment and basic paddling.\nPart 2: Essentials of Sea Kayaking – Move toward independence. Learn the strokes and maneuvers needed to kayak safely on your own.\nPart 3: Rescues & Recoveries (This Class!) – The ultimate confidence builder. Learn how to rescue yourself and others\, so you can show up as a capable leader and partner on the water.\n\nGrow my skills\n  \n\nQuick Details\n\nLocation: Bellingham Bay (Fairhaven)\nDate: September 27\, 2026\nTime: 1:30 pm – 4:30 pm\nCost: $25 per person\nCapacity: 12 people max\nAges: 16+\n\nKnow Before You Go\n\nSafety & Gear: All standard equipment\, including your kayak\, wetsuit\, and Personal Flotation Device (PFD)\, is provided.\nPersonal Gear: We’ll be practicing in the water. If you have your own wetsuit or drysuit\, feel free to bring it.\nYour Own Boat: If you’d like to learn in your own kayak\, please email the team at info@boatingcenter.org to let them know ahead of time.\nAccessibility: Participants will need to be able to transition to and from the dock or shore into a sea kayak and be comfortable entering the water for rescue practice. For specific accessibility questions\, the folks at CBCB are happy to help.\n\nSign me up

SUMMARY:Introduction to Wild Plant First Aid for Hikers and Backpackers: Autumn Edition
DESCRIPTION:Our ancestral roots in the dirt and the plants growing around us are ancient beyond record. The result: our feeling disconnected from the lands and waters that hold us. \nIf you wanna shake up sleepy ancestral curiosity and feel more oneness with nature\, sign up. \nConnect me! \nWe’ll share snacks and knowledge about the abundant plants\, trees\, and lichens across the Pacific Northwest that you can ethically harvest for health and healing\, and share book resources that can help you continue discovering\, learning\, and sharing. \n \nDuring this humble path towards reconnection\, we’ll meander through the park exploring leaves\, smell sap\, and discover ways the forest provides\, organically growing a closer relationship with nature and the natural world. \nWe’ll talk about the basics of identifying healing plants\, spotting toxic look-alikes\, harvesting with deep respect for the ecosystem\, and reciprocity. It’s fun learning about natural remedies for the typical bumps\, scrapes\, and ailments that occur while hiking and backpacking. \nTopics to look forward to: \n\nPoultices for infections\, sprains\, and bruises\nAntibacterial wound washes\nHerbal sprain remedies\nFinding plants that naturally keep insects away\nSoothing sunburns and dry skin with plant medicine\nAntifungal soaks straight from the forest\nUsing plants for pain and inflammation 101\nPracticing safe knife handling\n\n \nBrings & materials: \n\nA small day pack to carry your lunch\, drink\, and items\nComfortable outdoor shoes for moving around the park\nPen and paper (or your phone) for taking notes\nMake sure you’re bringing plenty of water to drink\, plus a little extra to use during the workshop\nEveryone’s receiving a 100% cotton bandana from us\nIf you don’t already own a good\, sharp\, safe knife that holsters in a sheath\, you’ve got the option to add a Morakniv Companion SRT (S) during registration.
